Ashtabula Environmental Management Project
Located in northeast Ohio, the Ashtabula Environmental Management Project is part of the DOE Ohio Field Office This cleanup site and some of the buildings are owned by the RMI Titanium Company Extrusion Plant (formerly Reactive Metals, Inc.). Some of the buildings and equipment are owned by DOE. Between 1962 and 1988, this facility extruded, forged and machined uranium metal received from the DOE Fernald Facility. Following processing, the uranium was shipped back to Fernald for final processing and packaging. Materials were then sent to other DOE facilities as feed for reactors, including Hanford and Savannah River Site. This work resulted in on-site and off-site contamination of buildings and environmental media.
Because this site is privately owned, it is being cleaned up under a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license. Cleanup of the site is expected to be complete in 2003. Future use is expected to be industrial and uranium cleanup levels are expected to be less than 30 pCi/g in soil.
