The Department of Energy (DOE) began the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) in 1974 to locate, control, and clean up sites where radioactive contamination may have remained from the early years of the U.S. atomic energy program.  In 1997 the FUSRAP program was transferred to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).  The Ohio FUSRAP sites are managed by the Buffalo District of the USACE

FUSRAP Goals:

  •  Identify former Manhattan Engineer District/U.S. Atomic Energy Commission sites.
  • Characterize (define) their radiological conditions.
  • Decontaminate or control sites to ensure protection of human health and the environment.
  • Certify that the sites are acceptable for future use.
