Herring-Hall-Marvin
Safe Company
Hamilton, Ohio
The former Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company, now owned by the Diebold Company was located at 1550 Grand Boulevard in Hamilton, Ohio. During the 1940's this company machined uranium slugs under subcontract with a prime Department of Energy contractor. The uranium slugs were machined from uranium billets. In August 1988 and April 1989, radiological surveys were conducted and very little uranium was found and removed. The building was dismissed from any additional DOE restrictions. During the spring of 1993 public attention was drawn to this facility by former workers who stated that the earlier surveys did not include the portion of the third floor where actual machining work was conducted. These radioactive residues were found to be in excess of DOE guidelines on over 25% of the third floor. Restricted access to the third floor was recommended to the current owner based upon these survey results.
Surface contamination was removed from the third floor areas. The radiological cleanup was initiated in December 1994 and completed in February 1995. At a cost of approximately one million dollars, HHM Safe Co. is the 18th FUSRAP site completion.
