Oversight at:
Department of Energy Sites
Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP)

Dayton Unit I, Dayton, Ohio

Dayton Unit I is located at 1515 Nicholas Road. The site was purchased by Monsanto Chemical Company in 1936.  Beginning in 1943, the company used Unit I to organize the polonium project and to recruit personnel. The buildings associated with Unit I were decontaminated and demolished.  The area is now a grassy field.

Dayton Unit I was recommended for inclusion into FUSRAP by the Department of Energy.  Subsequently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) performed a Preliminary Assessment/Site Inspection (PA/SI) in June 2002.  Extensive sampling was conducted at the site, including a number of cored soil samples throughout the potentially affected areas of the site.  Ohio EPA split 5 samples with the USACE as part of its oversight activities.

USACE concluded that the radionuclides and lead in site soils are similar to background concentrations in southwest Ohio and not related to past Manhatten Project activities. USACE determined that no further action is needed at the Dayton Unit I site.

OEPA disagrees with the conclusions stated in the site inspection portion of the report and has not concurred with the Corps decision.  Ohio EPA submitted comments recommending additional sampling for DW-01 and landfill E, further information on the construction, inflows, and outflows of DW-01, as well as additional justification too why the widespread metals’ contamination is not potentially due to Manhattan Project activities.
