Associate Aircraft Site

Fairfield, Ohio

Former Associate Aircraft Tool & Manufacturing facility at 3660 Dixie Highway, Fairfield, Ohio, is an operating machine shop covering approximately 20,000 to 25,000 square feet. In 1956, the Atomic Energy Commission and National Lead of Ohio contracted with Associate Aircraft to machine hollow uranium slugs for the Hanford and Savannah River reactors. Associate Aircraft machined approximately 96,000 slugs during the contract period. A survey conducted in June 1992 indicated uranium contamination in some concrete expansion joints and on the upper side of roof support beams. A radiological survey of the remaining property was conducted in September 1992, and additional residual contamination inside and outside the building was identified. DOE completed radiological cleanup of the site in May 1995, making it the 19th completed site.
