Since 1942, Battelle (or Battelle Columbus Laboratories Decommissioning Project) has performed nuclear research activities for the federal government and private companies at two locations in the Columbus area:

Caravan leaving site.A caravan hauling white containers containing radiation waste, is photographed leaving the site on it's way to the Savannah River Site in South Carolina; for storage prior to disposal at the WIPP in New Mexico.

Small inventory shipments of contact-handled TRU took place at the end of October 2005. Remote-handled caravan shipments of three 10-160B cask (photo 1) began in early November; and Closure Services declared physical completion on February 17th. All of the buildings are gone (photo 2), as well as the contaminated drains/soil removed.

Site photo with all structures removed.
Remaining are a number of final surveys and independent verifications, the technical review of these surveys and related contract close-out actions are expected to go on for several more months - possibly into June 06'. However, for all intents and purposes- the removal of radioactive contamination from Battelle's West Jefferson former research facilities, are complete.
