Lordstown Ordnance Plant is located 4 miles south of Warren, Ohio and covers approximately 567 acres. The facility was established in 1942, and was placed on inactive status in 1963. In July 1966, the orders that established the military reservation were rescinded. During the facility's operation, it served as an ordnance field service facility, a storage and supply depot, a field maintenance facility, an Army Reserve Center, and as administrative and logistical support for all Army aircraft (NIKE) activities in the Cleveland-Pittsburgh-Cincinnati defense complex. Potential contaminants from these activities are: TPH/BTEX constituents, PCBs, waste oils, spent solvents, etc. These contaminants have not been confirmed as the sample results have not yet been received by the Ohio EPA.
Subsequent to the deactivation of the facility, the General Services Administration (GSA) quitclaimed several tracts of land to various entities, including the Lordstown Local School District, the State of Ohio Department of Highways, and the Community Improvement Corporation of Warren and Trumbull County. In November 1976, by limited warranty deed, over 480 acres were conveyed from the Community Improvement Corporation of Warren and Trumbull County to Space Center of Ohio, Inc. This property is now an industrial park.
