Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base

Reference FUDS site:
FORMER LOCKBOURNE AIR FORCE BASE

Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base (Rickenbacker ANGB) is located 12 miles southeast of the city of Columbus, Ohio, just east of the Village of Lockbourne. The base is located in a rural/ residential area and was established in 1942. Rickenbacker ANGB was the former Lockbourne Air Force Base. The base was realigned in 1994.

In 1984, part of the Base was transferred to Rickenbacker Port Authority for use as a private and commercial airstrip. The remaining property was listed as a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) base in 1991 and was proposed for the National Priorities List by the U.S. EPA.

Most of the environmental work has been completed at Rickenbacker. Five sites are currently in operation and maintenance (O&M). These are Site 2 - Bulk Storage Tank Farm, Site 21 - Leaking Drum and Oil Change Area at Water Treatment Plant, Site 41 - Oil-Water Separator at Building 848, Site 42 - Jet Engine Test Stand and Site 43 - Test Cell Hush House. The contamination includes benzene and chlorinated solvents. Thallium has been detected at three of the sites in ground water.

In addition to the above work, there are two locations undergoing O&M work to address ground water contamination caused by the use of jet and aviation fuel. The two locations are the 1942 Fuel Line, Segment G and Pump houses 898 and 899.

Approximately 300 acres are left to transfer to Rickenbacker Port Authority . The areas undergoing remediation will remain under the control of the Air Force Base Conversion Agency until they may be transferred.
