Realignment And Closure Sites (BRACS)
Newark Air Force Base
Located in Southwest Heath, Licking County, Ohio in a mixed agricultural/residential/industrial area. Newark has a total area of approximately 69.5 acres. The facility is comprised of one large building and several smaller buildings, including an on-site day care facility.
Newark Air Force Base began operations in 1954, and was used as a depot until 1962. In 1962, the Air Force established the facility as its Calibration and Guidance Repair Activity Center for missiles and aircraft. In 1993, Newark Air Force Base was listed in the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC), and as a result is slated for closure on September 30, 1996. Efforts are being made to privatize the work load currently performed at Newark Air Force Base.
In 1991, a remedial investigation was completed for Newark Air Force Base by the Air Force. Contaminants found at the site include: freon 113; benzene; bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate; 1,2 dichloroethene; methylene chloride; PAHs; phenol; tetrachloroethene; 1,1,1 trichloroethane; trichloroethene; and toluene. This investigation resulted in no further action planned decisions for 11 of the 13 investigated sites. However, after review by the Ohio EPA, another more focused remedial investigation is scheduled to be conducted as part of the BRAC clean-up plan.
