Springfield Air National Guard Base

Located next to the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport is located in Clark County, south of the city of Springfield, Greene Township. The base is bordered by Mill Creek to the northeast.

In 1955, the SANGB facilities were built to house the 162nd Tactical Fighter Squadron at the Springfield Airport. The SANGB currently houses the 178th Tactical Fighter Group, as well as, the tenant units of the 251st Combat Communications Group and one of its Squadrons. Support systems for these groups are provided by detachments at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base located 10 miles to the west.

Past SANGB operations involved the use and disposal of materials and wastes such as: waste oils, paint, solvents, fuel, batteries, photographic materials, etc.. The contaminants have come from on-site activities which range from aircraft/vehicle/facilities maintenance, to petroleum, oil and lubricants management and corrosion control and a Preliminary Assessment and Site Assessment (PA/SI) were conducted under the Installation Restoration Program. The PA/SI identified and investigated areas and media of concern where that past operations involved the use and disposal of materials caused contamination and the possible of contaminant migration. Upon the completion of the PA/SI the Department of Defense has conducted a Remedial Investigation (RI) to define the nature, extent and potential risks to human health and the environment posed by the contamination confirmed during the PA/SI . The RI is limited to the two sites investigated during the PA/SI which showed the highest potential for risk. These sites were: Site 2 (Fire Training Area 2) and Site 4 (Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants Area (POL))

At Site 2 it was determined that a potential existed for volatile organic (VOCs), semi-volatile organic (SVOCs) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) to be present in the soils, sediment and groundwater. Site 4 (POL)VOCs were detected in both the soil and ground water.

The Remedial Investigation field work has been completed and the report is currently under development.
