staging/disposal area, Heating Plant 2
Re-grading of landfills 3, 4, 6, and 7 was completed in Spring 1998. Long-term
monitoring is being addressed under the Basewide Monitoring Program. A cover
maintenance program and a landfill gas monitoring program continues at the
landfills. At the drum staging/disposal area, drums were recovered and disposed
of in 1990. In January 1996 at Heating Plant 2, elemental mercury was found in a
storm drain from this building when the storm sewer was accidentally broken
during maintenance work outside the building. During the investigation, any
remaining mercury or contaminated sludge was removed from inside the storm
drain. The storm drain was capped and floor drain lines from the heating plant
were cleaned and abandoned.
