Load Line 12
(RVAAP 12)
From 1951-57, 1981-83, and
1989-1993, building wash-down water and waste water from bomb melt out facility
operations were collected in a house gutter system, and flowed through a piping
system to two stainless steel tanks. The first tank was used for settling and
the second tank was used for filtration. Prior to the 1980's, the water leaked
under the building and ponded there. Building wash-down water from the Building
904 was also swept out through the doorways onto the ground surrounding the
building. After 1981, the water was treated in the Load Line 12 waste water
treatment system (RVAAP-18). Contaminants of concern at this unit are explosive
compounds and heavy metals (lead, chromium, cadmium, mercury). There is a high
potential for releases from this unit to the soils, surface water/sediments, and
groundwater.
A Phase II RI is
scheduled for the summer of 2000. An interim removal is also planned for FY 2000
for the explosive contaminated soils in the vicinity of Building 904 which was
demolished and removed from the site in 1999.
