Load Line 1
(RVAAP 08)
From approximately 1941 to
1971, building wash-down water and waste water from the load line operations
were collected in concrete sumps, pumped through the sawdust filtration units
and then discharged to a settling pond. Building wash-down water from the
melt-pour buildings was also swept out through the doorways onto the ground
surrounding the buildings. The settling pond was an unlined earthen impoundment
approximately 1 acre in size. Water from the impoundment was discharged to a
surface stream that exited the installation. This area was also used as a demil
area. Contaminants of concern at this unit are explosive compounds and heavy
metals (lead, chromium, and mercury). There is a high potential for releases
from this unit to the soils, surface water/sediment and groundwater.
The Phase I RI sampling
found high levels of explosives around the melt-pour and prep buildings. Eight
wells were installed in 1999 to bring the total wells on the entire installation
to 13.
