Demolition Area #1
(RVAAP 03)
This is a 1.5-acre AOC that was used for the purpose of thermal treatment of munitions by burning and detonation, and was operational from 1941 though 1949. The AOC consists of a circular 1 to 1.5-foot berm surrounding a grassed area approximately 1 to 1.5 acres in size. Operations took place in 8-foot deep unlined pits. Contaminants of concern at this AOC include explosive compounds and metals. There is a potential for release of contaminants from this unit to the surrounding soils and ground water. Munitions fragments including scrap metal, small arms primers, and fuzes lie outside the bermed area.
The Phase I RI field work was completed at this site in October 1999 with a draft report of findings due in February 2000. An interim removal action will be done at this site in FY2000 to remediate soils having high levels of explosives and metals. These hot spots are located primarily in an area outside the horseshoe where munitions and scrap were pushed after detonation.
